Television Infomercial Advertising

Television Infomercial AdvertisingTelevision Infomercial AdvertisingInfomercials are hard to sell, direct response TV commercials that usually last between 15 and 30 minutes. This is called long-form advertising and is used for products that can cost hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars. Infomercials that are up to two minutes long are known as short-form commercials and usually come with a price tag under $20. This schrift of advertising is also known as paid programming, with a disclaimer preceding it using language like the following is a paid advertisement for XYZ brand. Infomercialsalways ask for a sale, and are a prime example of the AIDA model. Brief History of the Infomercial Although infomercials became popular in the early 1980s, it is believed that the first ever long-form infomercial aired in the late 1940s for a Vitamix blender. However, in the 1970s, specifically in the San Diego area, the format took off when a one-hour TV show ran ads every Sunday for local ho mes. In 1982, the infomercial format we know well today aired, and it was for hair restoration and growth treatments. This was the beginning of the rise of the modern infomercial. In 1984, they really took off, when FCC regulations imposing time limits on advertising were lifted. And it was this, coupled with the rise in popularity of self-help products and home cooking utensils that the craze caught on. Everyone was hooked on the sell, sell, sell buzz of these high-energy shows. Top 10 Infomercial Products Through The Ages There have been hundreds of products sold using the infomercial format over the last 30 years. But some do much better than others. Here then is the top 10 all-time best selling infomercial successes The Foodsaver Food Vacuum Packaging MachineA simple but expensive machine (around $130) that increases the shelf life of your food by five times. The PedEggA small cheese grater for your feet that beat out the pumice stone in consumer tests. The SnuggieIt doesnt ge t more simple than a blanket with sleeves. But the snappy jingle and low price point made it a huge success. The Slap-ChopOne of two products in the countdown hawked by Vince Shlomi, the Billy Mays wannabe. A quick and easy way to chop any kind of food, and make great tuna salad in seconds. Ionic Breeze Air PurifierSharper Image found its way into millions of homes with the product that removed dust, allergens and pet dander.Carleton Sheets Real Estate TutorialGive him a few hours and hell turn you into a real estate tycoon.Showtime Pro Electric Rotisserie OvenRon Popeil, the master of the modern infomercial, tells you to tischset it and forget it with the countertop rotisserie from Ronco.ShamWowVince Shlomi again, this time selling a chamois that will hold ten times its own weight in liquid. The BowFlex Home GymDangling the carrot of the perfect body in front of couch potatoes, the BowFlex home gym is the most popular infomercial exercise machine of all time.ProactiveAnd the number one spot goes to another product aiming at perfection, only this time its perfect skin. With celebrity endorsements and a low price point, it captured the attention of anyone and everyone with one pimple too many. Pros and Cons of Using the Infomercial Format There are upsides and downsides to the infomercial as a sales tool. Lets start with why they could be an ideal vehicle for your product or service. The Pros of the Infomercial Length. If you have a story to tell that is not going to fit in a traditional short form spot, you will love the time given to you in an infomercial. Most are around 30 minutes long, giving you plenty of room to sell every benefit and ask for the sale.Cost. Infomercials, also known as paid programming, are usually aired during non-peak hours. The time slots between 11 pm and 6 am are very cheap, usually because not many people are watching TV. Also, it usually costs more to produce a 30-second ad than a 30-minute infomercial. Ease of production. Unlik e 30-second spots that involve big ad agencies and high-end budgets, infomercials follow a simple, straightforward format. To be honest, when youve seen one, youve seen them all. Just swap out the products.Real-time ROI tracking. Unlike the ads that are more about driving awareness, infomercials are build to drive sales in real time. You can see the numbers as the infomercial airs, and see how much product youre selling.People like them. Its true. A certain audience loves the entertaining morning showformat, and when you consider how many people avoid ads these days, thats great news. The Cons of the Infomercial Stigma. The infomercial is not considered premium advertising. Most products are the As Seen On TV kind of things. You wouldnt get Nike or Apple doing an infomercial (at least, not in the format we all know of), the stigma attached would sully such brands. So, you have to know that your product will benefit from this.Viewership. The infomercials are always running during th e non-peak hours, so you are going to have a certain type of audience. Night owls, stay at home parents, old people, and so on. Of course, you will catch a wide variety of viewers, but the majority will be people that have the time and lifestyle that means they can watch TV in those hours. Price Point. You have to be able to hit a certain selling price during an infomercial in order to justify the cost. If you sell a widget that costs only $4.99, the infomercial is probably not going to work for you. Most of the time, youre looking at something like 3 easy payments of $19.99. You could bundle up though. 4 widgets for $19.99 plus SH is much more likely to work in this format.

Heres the one choice I hope you will make today

Here's the one choice I hope you will make today Here's the one choice I hope you will make today Can I be honest with you about Paris for a second? It’s totally disgusting. That’s what I was thinking the first few days of our journey. We walked down from our 2nd floor apartment at Rue de Chevert, past a few outdoor cafes, and across the street toward the pâtisserie, and I couldn’t help but notice: Our building smelled funny. Those cafes spewed cigarette smoke blown by its patrons. Homeless people wandered between me and my chocolate croissant. This is what people made movies and songs and posters about? This is the home of artists where dreams come true? This is Paris? As my eyes scanned some crude graffiti, I couldn’t help but think of the line in Woody Allen’s movie, Midnight in Paris:“That Paris exists and anyone would choose to live anywhere else in the world will always be a mystery to me.”Quickly, I revised it:“That anyone would choose to live in Paris is a mystery to me.”I missed my bed. I missed my dog. More than anything, I missed Nowhere, Tennessee - my comfortable home where nothing ever went wrong.- - - The Eiffel Tower cannot be done justice by any adjective in my vocabulary. Embarrassingly, I keep returning to “really, really big.” Kate and I stared at it for hours.Sacre Coeur, which sits smack dab in the middle of Montmartre (my favorite part of Paris), is nothing less than spiritual. I hope to think of it on my deathbed.Giverny is paradise. Each crevice leaks the best nature has to offer. It makes you feel like Claude Monet’s water lilies were kind of inevitable. A day there could never be enough.La Fontaine de Mars holds the best meal I have ever eaten. Sitting across the table from my bride - with no laundry, no appointments, no pets - was worth the cost of our international journey.Over the next few days, we became Parisians. Albeit very quiet ones.On our last night, I hated to go.- - - Here’s what happened when we decided to step into the pictures of Paris and risk shattering the illusion:Real life.In real life, yeah - you get to see your spouse naked all the time. But you also get to watch an adult throw a tantrum when they can’t find the right pair of socks. In real life, yeah - you get strangers to adore and support your art. But you also get to work for nobody 95% of the time.In real life, yeah - you get more money. But you also get more expenses, more taxes, and more expectations. And in real life, yeah - you get to see the Eiffel Tower. But there will still be hucksters selling beer and wine for massive markups on the street. These are Truths. Now for the crushing part:You can easily skirt by all discomfort in life. Many people do.Don’t want to put up with the headache of international travel? Hang a picture of the Eiffel Tower. It will look better than the ones I took.Don’t want to ever fight with a significant other? Watch romantic movies alone at night. It will be much calmer than a real relationship. You can duck hospital visits, excuse yourself from funerals, quit hard jobs, and depart from friends when “drama” happens. You can slip away from arguments, leave disagreements unresolved, refuse to push yourself, and ignore the voices inside which ask for more.Or:You can let love crush you.You can allow bad art to happen. You can watch as Paris moves from shiny storybook to rugged reality. You can take the journey.I hope you choose the journey.- - - Share this with someone who needs to hear it.Much love as always ?- To dd BThis  article  first appeared on Medium.

Lessons from Bradley Cooper in empowering people

Lessons from Bradley Cooper in empowering people Lessons from Bradley Cooper in empowering people I saw “A Star Is Born” on opening weekend and, despite my outlandish expectations, it was one of the best movie experiences I’ve had in years. But that doesn’t mean I planned to write about it.However, reading and watching the discussion around the film has revealed to me surprising details that matter for leaders and managers. Bradley Cooper, as director and standard-bearer for this film, has done two things besides make a well-received movie. He has 1) consistently given public credit to others, and 2) demonstrated that he understands that creating a vision for a team means leaving room for those people to shine.Giving creditCooper’s not being glib or thoughtless in his praise of others, at least not that I’ve seen. He doesn’t give credit when it’s not warranted - say, denying his role in the directing, acting or storytelling. He doesn’t embellish the accomplishments of whomever he’s praising, either.Rather, when an aspect of the film is mentioned that was acco mplished by someone else, Cooper gives specific credit to that person. This sounds insignificant, and maybe it should be, but such actions stand out in our society. This isn’t entirely new. He went on “Ellen” over a year ago to talk about the movie while it was being made, and almost immediately, he answers Ellen DeGeneres’ “You’ve written, you’re directing, you’re starring in ‘A Star Is Born’” by noting that he has two co-writers on the film.He then goes on to talk about how audiences will get to witness Lady Gaga’s talent, as well as how he’s learned how difficult singing is when you need to do it on camera. These are small things, but when people are asked to talk about yourself publicly, they tend to only talk about themselves.More recently, I saw Cooper deflecting Jimmy Fallon’s praise for having the No. 1 song on iTunes (“Shallow”) by noting the songwriters. This could just be the type of name-checking that you see at awards shows (“I’d like to thank my agent … ”, but I’m not so sure. After all, most folks don’t know or care who Mark Ronson is, nor do they care that Cooper only sang on the song and didn’t compose it.If you accomplish something, stand up for it. Enjoy the praise! But it’s so easy to start taking credit for things you didn’t do or start to think that you didn’t have help along the way.Vision requires a collectivePerhaps more surprising to me is to hear the stories of “A Star Is Born” actors talking about how Cooper’s generosity as a screenwriter and a director. After all, he spent years thinking about this movie, securing the rights and funding, writing the script and songs, preparing to act and direct, soliciting cast members, ensuring the film slyly mentioned every predecessor. Cooper even spent months changing his voice to win over Sam Elliott. He potentially put his career on the line to remake a film that had last been attempted, rather inauspiciously, more than 40 years earlier. One might think he’s being a micromanager. And perhaps he was with certain things. But then you see Shangela of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” talk about getting to improv the drag bar scenes. Cooper’s real-life ear doctor, who has an early scene, says he was told to improv because “[y]ou know this stuff much better than whatever we wrote into the script.” If that’s not enough, there’s the interview with the woman who plays his assistant â€" she told Vulture how Cooper encouraged her and other actors to build on the scripted dialogue. This direction Cooper provided wasn’t just about freedom but also about a safe environment. Dave Chappelle has acted in many films, and he had one of the most famous and renowned comedy shows ever made. But “A Star is Born” was different for him:“The way he directed me and the way we would talk about the scene, and the way he would create an environment that gave me the courage to actually be vulnerable in a way that comedy would never le t me be. I never felt threatened or unsafe.”Even Cooper felt free to disregard his own script at times. His vision appears to have been bigger than just the script.“The one thing that I begged of everybody in the room here is to trust me,” Cooper said. “Even if the movie sucked … they were going to be authentic no matter what.”Note that none of the characters mentioned above are, technically, essential to the movie. But they were essential to Cooper’s vision, and he told them so in his words and actions. When you have essential people, you want them to deliver their best. And so you guide them, but you also don’t get in their way.Where are you taking credit when you shouldn’t? Where can you take a moment to spotlight someone who is deserving but underappreciated? If you have authority and power, how can you deploy it to showcase the deserving people around you?James daSilva is the longtime editor of SmartBrief’s leadership newsletter and blog content, as well as n ewsletters for distributors, manufacturers and other fields. How to Get Noticed By Leadership (Without Sucking Up)

How to Get Noticed By Leadership (Without Sucking Up) How to Get Noticed By Leadership (Without Sucking Up) If you’re truly interested in working your way up in your career, one of the best things that you can do is get in management’s good graces. But as with anything, there’s a right way and a wrong way to do it. Raving about a dish that a certain executive brings to the office potluck or forcing outrageous laughter every time they tell a joke probably won’t get you very far, for example. And it’s no wonder, really - if you want leadership to have a positive view of you, you need to highlight your professional skills , not your flattery skills. But how exactly can you do that without coming off as arrogant or seem like you’re sucking up? Try these six tried-and-true strategies. The easiest way to make a positive impression on leadership is to simply excel at what you do. But in order to do that, you need to first thoroughly understand what it is that you should be doing. “Discuss with [your boss] what success looks like in your role, then exceed those expectations. Make sure that your boss gives you very specific expectations that are both quantitative and qualitative,” says Natasha Bowman, Chief Consultant at Performance ReNEW and author of the book You Can’t Do That at Work! 100 Legal Mistakes That Managers Make in the Workplace . Once you have those goals figured out, it’s time to execute on them. “Put your head down and focus on the work without worrying about being noticed” at first, recommends Foram Soni Sheth , Co-Founder and Career Coach at Ama la Vida . “Make sure it’s a pattern of you reliably delivering results so that when you speak with leadership, you’re able to demonstrate your value through actions.” Once you’ve racked up some impressive achievements , don’t be shy about highlighting them. Higher-ups won’t always have the bandwidth to proactively check in on you, so occasionally communicating your wins could be the only way for them to see how much of an impact you’re having. “Setting up regular communications to keep your manager in the loop lets you periodically share what you’re working on including recent accomplishments. Most managers like to stay informed, so this benefits both of you,” says Mikaela Kiner, Founder/CEO of UniquelyHR . And don’t worry if it feels a little bit uncomfortable at first. “Once you make a habit of sharing wins along with other information, you won’t feel like you’re screaming ‘Look at me!’ every time something good happens that you want to share,” Kiner says. Again, proactivity is going to be the name of the game when it comes to getting noticed by leadership. If you don’t work with them on a regular basis, it benefits you to find ways to do so. “You may be in a position where you spend a lot of time with your manager, but little or no time with his/her peers and superiors. There’s a risk when it comes time for raises or promotions that people will be on the fence if they don’t have first-hand experience working with you,” Kiner says. “Ask your manager if there are ways to present important updates at a staff or leadership team meeting. Giving senior people visibility to your work goes a long way.” You may be taking on all of the responsibilities laid out for you in your job description, but to really stand out, you often need to go above and beyond. “Those who meet their job description to the tee are doing good work but not noticeable work… to really stand out, go beyond your job description,” Sheth says. “Take the initiative to do more such as mentoring new employees or putting in the extra time to finish a deadline for your team, not because someone asked you to do it, but because you wanted to. People will quickly take note of you going above and beyond and this will catch the eyes of the leadership team without you having to bring it up.” Not only does this make you look good - it can also unlock new opportunities for you. “ By volunteering for projects outside of your scope of work, you are demonstrating to your boss that you are open to growth and development within your organization,” Bowman says. If you’re looking for specific projects to take on at your company, you can’t go wrong with internal efforts. “Leaders most commonly worry about two things in the organization: 1) Revenue & 2) Its people,” Sheth explains. “Find ways for you to contribute internally to the organization such as improving outdated processes which can help the employees save more time or perhaps you start internal networking for employees to get to know each other, or you create a group to solve a business problem.” And to really drive home the value of your efforts, “ask to speak with a leader of the organization to share your thoughts, why it’s important for you to lead this initiative, why it would help the organization and ask [for] their support. This will help you get directly noticed by a leader and they’ll have a direct hand in helping you build your internal initiative,” Sheth suggests. It’s great when companies offer classes and training , but it can still be a relatively rare find. So if your company does provide you with one of these programs, make sure to take advantage of it. But even if they don’t, there are plenty of things you can do to help yourself grow professionally. “Develop yourself by furthering your education and completing a certification course in your area of expertise. Stay abreast of current trends and developments in your field and send your boss links or copies of articles that are interesting and could be beneficial to the success [of] your organization,” Bowman suggests.

Degrees in Hybrid Automotive Engineering Abound

Degrees in Hybrid Automotive Engineering Abound Degrees in Hybrid Automotive Engineering Abound As the major automotive manufacturers race to develop the next generation of hybrid vehicles and the U.S government continues to pour in research dollars to hasten their development, hybrid automotive engineers are becoming a hot commodity. Many mainstream colleges and universities as well as technical institutes now are tweaking their engineering programs to include undergraduate and graduate degrees in hybrid automotive engineering. Students can even study hybrid automotive engineering abroad at leading educational institutions such as HAN University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, the University of Leeds in the U.K., and the Westsachsische Hochschule Zwickau University of Applied Sciences in Germany. The new era of hybrid vehicles is creating the need for multidiscipline skillsets that go well beyond traditional automotive training. For example, the Michigan Technological University launched its interdisciplinary professional Master of Engineering program with graduate and undergraduate certification in propulsion technologies for hybrid and electric vehicles. The curriculum development is supported by a three-year, $3-million grant from the Department of Energy under the Transportation Electrification Program. The curriculum is being developed in partnership with General Motors and engineering organizations. Beyond propulsion technologies, the curriculum will offer many new and exciting challenges to students in areas such as fuel cells and hydrogen, alternative fuels, battery packs, DC converters, energy storage systems, battery management systems, battery charging systems, and greenhouse gas assessment. Recognizing the need to educate the next generation of engineers who would be capable of developing and commercializing advanced automotive technologies, in early 2000, the Department of Energy established Graduate Automotive Technology Education (GATE) Centers of Excellence to provide a new generation of engineers and scientists with knowledge and skills in advanced automotive technologies. Today, eight universities have received DOE GATE awards and are focusing their research on hybrid propulsion systems, fuel cells, advanced computation and simulation, energy storage systems, biofuels, and lightweight materials. The GATE centers are: The University of Alabama at Birminghams GATE Center of Excellence focusing on lightweight materials, advanced computation and simulation, and biomechanics. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaigns GATE Center for Advanced Automotive Bio-Fuel Combustion Engines. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Universitys GATE Center for Automotive Fuel Cell Systems. The Ohio State Universitys GATE Center for Modeling, Control, and System Integration of Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems. The University of California-Daviss Fuel Cell Hydrogen Hybrid Vehicle (FCH2V) GATE Centers. Do you have what it takes to become a superboss

Do you have what it takes to become a superboss Do you have what it takes to become a superboss Sydney Finkelstein is the Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck School of Business at Dart mouth College and the di rector of Tuck’s Center for Leadership. A consultant and speaker to senior execu tives around the globe, he is listed in Thinkers50, the world’s most prestigious ranking of leadership gurus. Author and award-winning podcaster David Burkus recently hosted him on Radio Free Leader to talk about the surprising makings of a “superboss,” and what steps we can all take to become one ourselves.David: How did you transition from studying the terrible decisions that people make to studying superbosses that attract and grow talent?Sydney: After writing a couple of books on failure, I felt like there was more to the story that I hadn’t really gotten to. If there’s one thing that you need to do to thrive and live longer as an organization, it’s the ability to generate and regenerate talent on a continuous basis. And that realization got me to think, “Wel l, who’s good at that?” That brought me to Alice Waters, the famous chef and restaurateur from Chez Panisse in Berkeley. She pretty much created, or resurrected, the organic, farm-to-table local sourcing of high-quality food, and if you look at the number of people that worked for her [and later] opened up their own restaurants, it’s in the hundreds. I said, “Okay, let me figure out what it is she did,” and then I started asking, “Well, who else is there?”I started looking at one industry after another, from the National Football League, to jazz, to consumer packaged goods, to hedge funds, to advertising, to American comedy - really diverse industries. And in every industry I looked at, I was able to identify one, sometimes two, but mostly one person that had this outsized influence on the development of great talent. And those were the people that I came to call “superbosses.”David: That’s an interesting insight, because I’ve found that the moment you lay out some best practices or evidence-based suggestions to people, one of the most common responses is, “Well, yeah, that works great for this, but it would never work in our industry.” One of the things I like about these superbosses is that they come from every industry, sector, company, and geography. There are things that are tried and true, regardless of where you find yourself in a leadership role.Every industry is made of people, right? So people are a lot of times at the core of these problems. It’s not like your industry would be exempt from that, unless your industry is run entirely by robots. But if it was, we wouldn’t be talking about how to attract, retain, develop talent.Speaking of talent, one of the traits of superbosses is that they look for talent in unlikely places, or they look for new, untapped pools of talent. Tell us about how you found that insight.Sydney: Well, every large company has sophisticated HR practices and standard methods. But superbosses … Th ey’re not against any standard methods, but they also add their own thing. They’re talent spotters, always on the lookout for great talent. I interviewed hundreds of people for this research, and you keep hearing the same story, in some version or another.“They’re not stuck to following the job description and saying, ‘Who checks the most boxes?’ They’re looking for people that check boxes they haven’t even thought about.”One story was about Bill Walsh, the San Francisco 49ers head coach who won three or four Super Bowls in his time. One year, he went to recruit a highly touted quarterback, and he went out to see him practice. The quarterback was throwing some passes to his roommate, who was just helping him out. The roommate was on the football team, but not a star or anything like that. Walsh is watching, spending a few hours with them. He goes back, and on draft day, he ends up bypassing that highly touted quarterback and picks the guy that was catching the ball for him. And that guy turns out to be Dwight Clark, the legendary 49er receiver who made the catch in the end zone to win a Super Bowl. When [superbosses] find someone, they’re willing to create an opportunity for them. They’re not stuck to following the job description and saying, “Who checks the most boxes?” They’re looking for people that check boxes they haven’t even thought about. They’re looking for unusual talent, and to do that, you’ve got to look for it in different places - diamonds in the rough, if you will.David: I love that insight, that when they find that talent, they’re willing to adapt the job, or even adapt a division of the organization, to fit that talent. They don’t see it as just, “We have this box on the org chart that is now empty because somebody left or got promoted, so we’ve got to find a carbon copy of that person.” Sometimes it’s, “Okay, there’s this vacancy, and there’s this really talented person. So let’s rearrange [things] to make the best use of this new talented person.” No new talent is going to be the same as the talent that created that opening. So every time there’s an opening, we have to kind of rewrite the org chart to figure out the best way to use that new source of talent. One of the other insights I thought was really interesting in Superbosses was the effect of talent in teams, what you call “the cohort effect” - this idea that even though we’re encouraging teamwork and collegiality, we’re also encouraging internal competition. Superbosses navigate that balance perfectly, and it leads to far greater performance than if you stress one over the other.Sydney: Yeah, within a team you want to create both collaboration and a degree of competition. One of my favorite examples of that is Lorne Michaels, the creator of Saturday Night Live. He’s been doing it for decades.Think about that show - you have to collaborate with writers and other performers to create a skit. But as you get later and later in the week, all these skits - three hours of material - have to get winnowed down into an hour. And that, in a sense, is the definition of competition: When you have only so many seats around the table, and you’ve got way more people - or in this case, skits - [than will fit].So if you want to succeed at SNL, you’ve got to learn to cooperate, to work with other people. But at the same time, you can’t lose a bit of that edge that [makes you] want to win - you still want to get your skit out there on Saturday night. That’s the special combination.“Within a team, you want to create both collaboration and a degree of competition.”David: One of the other insights I thought was really cool and counterintuitive was this idea of saying goodbye. In so many organizations, if you decide to leave, that’s the end of the relationship; you’ll probably never hear from anybody again. But superbosses say goodbye on good terms, not saying, “Farewell† but “Keep in touch.” Instead of responding with anger, [they] allow that relationship to continue, even if [the departing employee] no longer serves the needs of the organization.Sydney: Managing the flow of talent is going to be one of the biggest differentiators in business over the next decades. We know that many people are going to be looking for new opportunities. And the best people, of course, are always looking to grow. So [it’s important to] not only develop and motivate people, but also manage them out of the organization. And you get a big bonus, by the way, when you do this - you can become known as a talent magnet. Because if you’ve had people on your team that work for you for a while and then move on and are very, very successful, that’s not a secret. People hear about that. Especially today, with LinkedIn and so much data that’s out there, it’s not hard for us to figure out what the background is of the people that have done well. So [new talent can] look for where they came from and say, “That could be a good breeding ground for me. I’m going to go see if I can connect with some of those people.”David: Yeah, I agree. And if you’re saying farewell on good terms, they can sometimes act as a source of new talent for you. If you let them grow and [take on] a leadership role in a different company, or even a different industry, you’re now tapped through that relationship to whole areas of new talent.Sydney: That’s absolutely right. Superbosses will even rehire some of those people after they’ve had a tour of duty somewhere else for two, four, five years. But as you say, they can also tap into the community that their former protégé are now part of.Because you helped them get better, there’s this powerful bond. All it requires is for the boss, the leader, to continue to interact and to manage that network as a key asset. And it’s not networking 101 where you just talk to people now and then - it’s looking for b usiness opportunities, it’s continuing to help other people even when they’ve moved on. It’s a lot more than just staying in touch.David: I wonder if we could switch a bit … What is the best advice you’ve ever received?Sydney: The best advice I’ve received … Pretty early in my career, I had a master’s degree. I didn’t know what I was going to do, but I ended up being hired by my undergraduate institution to be an instructor. I wasn’t doing any research [or in a PhD program] - I was just a teacher. I loved doing it, and when my two-year contract was coming up, I’d done really well. And the department chair - I still remember this meeting - he says, “You know, we’re not going to renew your contract, Sydney.” And of course, [my] heart plummeted.“I’m firing you, and it’s for your own good.”He said, “The reason we’re not going to renew your contract is that if you’re really serious about this, you’ve got to go get a PhD. You’ve got to lear n to do research, earn your stripes. You have to accomplish more than just coming here and teaching. Even though you’re highly competent at that, it’s not enough.” That, of course, pushed me in the direction of the career I ended up having, and it would not have been possible [without that advice about] getting your credentials, paying your dues, and doing what you need to do to become an expert at something. So the advice was, “I’m firing you, and it’s for your own good.” And it was exactly right.David: And, “I’m firing you on good terms,” right? Which is exactly the insight we were just talking about. What do you believe that most people don’t?Sydney: I believe that no matter who you are - whether you’re a CEO, a president, or a candidate for president - you are very, very similar to me and just about everyone else. And it might not look that way, because sometimes people are unbelievably wealthy, and [have] different skills, and intelligence, and experienc es, but they’re just people. We don’t like to get criticized, we stick our head in the sand, we procrastinate, and we have certain biases and emotions that affect our decisions. Everybody is like that. It’s a great equalizer when you realize that, because it means that no one is truly better than you. They may have accomplished things you’ve never dreamed of, but that’s not the point. The point is about who you are as a person and what you’re made of, and when we level the playing field, it [allows] everyone to say, “You know, I don’t need to be intimidated by someone that has this incredible résumé. That’s the path they chose. But I can choose my own path, and I’m going to have an impact in my own way, in my own community, over the course of my own life.” I find that very inspiring and meaningful.David: I’m right there with you. Even from a young age, I remember my brother would make fun of me about this, because we’d go to different rock shows, and I nev er got starstruck, and he always did. I was always like, “He’s just another guy. He might put his gold pants on one leg at a time, but he puts them on one leg at a time.”Sydney: We’re talking about rock stars and CEOs and presidential candidates, but the people who shovel snow or come in to clean your office are people too, and they deserve our respect. They deserve an opportunity to accomplish goals that are meaningful for them. We’re all born with certain skills and capabilities from our genetic makeup, and it’s what you do with those that really means something to me. If you’re born with all kinds of advantages - high IQ, wealthy family connections - what are you going to accomplish from there? And if you’re born in much tougher circumstances, what’s your contribution to the world? It’s a different contribution, but it’s just as meaningful. This article originally appeared on Heleo.
